Acupuncture is considered a form of treatment or therapy. However, acupuncture practitioners believe that acupuncture may be most successful when it is applied as an early intervention for symptoms or conditions. It may be that acupuncture can prevent some symptoms and conditions from becoming worse or chronic. To date, two studies have shown a positive effect in preventing breech births among pregnant women. More research is needed to define the preventive value of acupuncture.
Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is widely practiced in the United States. An estimated 15 million Americans have undergone acupuncture, and about five million undergo the treatment each year. People may find the procedure painless, although some points in some patients may be quite sensitive. Depending on your practitioner, the needles may be twirled or warmed. There are many state acupuncture organizations, and many states also have acupuncture regulations and codes. Almost every state has a State Acupuncture Board, and there are more than 50 accredited schools of acupuncture in the U.S. Widely practiced around the world, especially in Asia (the practice originated in China) and Europe, acupuncture didnt gain a notable following in the U.S. until the 1970s, after President Richard Nixons visit to the Peoples Republic of China. James Reston, a member of the press corps accompanying Nixon, also piqued public interest when he wrote about how physicians in Beijing eased his post-surgery abdominal pain with needles. Acupuncture has been gaining popularity in the U.S. ever since.
The NIH panel stated that there is clear clinical evidence that acupuncture provides relief from the nausea associated with chemotherapy, anesthesia or pregnancy, as well as post-operative dental pain. There are other situations in which research on acupunctures effectiveness is less convincing, yet still promising:

In contrast to other commercial real estate markets throughout the country, the New Jersey commercial real estate market remains relatively strong. While there are soft pockets in the marketplace, low vacancy rates, stable rents, and limited new construction are positive signs for the commercial real estate market to remain stable throughout New Jersey. One of the most exciting new development trends over the past year is the renaissance taking place in our states urban areas. In cities like Newark, Harrison, Trenton, Bound Brook, the Amboyis and, of course, the entire Hudson River waterfront, the developmental, political and cultural communities have converged to push growth back to the urban market. These initiatives are definitely sustainable which bodes well for new development opportunities. New construction projects are experiencing strong success with their pre-leasing efforts. A look throughout the state shows that there are very few spec office buildings remaining empty. Many developers are continuing to experience great success in redevelopment as well. These developments offer tenants virtually new space, with the advantages of modem construction at lower rental rates. This market should remain strong with potential new redevelopment sites still available. Older buildings are being upgraded in order to accommodate the technology needs of todayis tenants, thereby making them more marketable. Most buildings are being re-wired for high-speed voice, data and Internet usage, which makes them more attractive to new users.
In a transaction arranged by Newmark Company Real Estate of New Jersey, Emcore Corporation, a computer chip manufacturer, has purchased a 74,850 SF office facility at 394 Elizabeth Ave. in Somerset, N.J. The Newmark team of Seena Stein, president, Richard Madison, managing director, and Jane Greenblatt, senior managing director, along with James Kuhn and David Noonan, of the firms New York office, brokered the $4.5 million sale. Paul March, of CB Richard Ellis, represented Emcore in the negotiations.
According to Stanley Simon, SIOR, chief executive officer of Newmark JGT, While there has clearly been a slowdown in the economy, which began before the Sept. 11 tragedy, the commercial real estate markets fundamentals still remain strong, and in fact, have created opportunities for tenants, investors, developers, and service providers. Simon points to the lack of new spec development, a more balanced market for tenants, and moderate price adjustments as key factors n the markets underlying strength. The slowdown in the national economy and depressed corporate earnings have hit the New Jersey commercial real estate market during this first three quarters of 2001, he said. However, these effects have not been dramatic, and pale in comparison to the downturn of the mid 1990s and late 1980s. In fact, the correction in the economy has created a more balanced commercial real estate market for tenants who are finding it easier to relocate or expand within the state. According to Newmark JGT, the trends in the office market in New Jersey in 2001 have been reflected in a moderate decline in average asking rental rates. Meanwhile, the overall vacancy rate has increased due to the negative absorption of more than 2 million SF of space in the New Jersey market, which can be attributed to new sublease space returned as a result of corporate restructuring. Of the more than 20 million SF of office space available, nearly 25% is sublease space. The vacancy rate for space on the market from landlords is well under 10%, a comparatively sound vacancy rate for a suburban office market the size of New Jersey.

Gus Alexander wonders whether too much Health and Safety is bad for youThe trouble with working for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is that once everything has been made safe, youre out of a job. For this reason the boundaries of what is not acceptable are being constantly extended. What this legislation said was that issues of health and safety had to be considered at the very outset of every (non-domestic) construction project, and a new role, that of Planning Supervisor, was created to monitor the whole process. Building a new airport? Right. Appoint a Planning Supervisor and instigate a Safety Audit immediately. Secondary consultants such as architects and engineers can come later.
Organizational climate differs from culture in its lack of permanence and stability. The safety climate in particular, is a snapshot of employees perceptions of a current environment or prevailing conditions, which impact upon safety (Mearns et al., 2000). Based on common themes in various definitions of safety climate. Wiegmann et al. (2002) derived the following definition of safety climate: [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Safety professionals and organizational leaders cannot overlook the importance of safety climate within their organization. The safety climate can fluctuate with real-time influences, such as new leadership, organizational changes, and environmental impacts. Safety managers, and corporate managers in general, must be vigilant for climate changes, realizing the constant fluctuation. Through diligence and effort, the climate can possibly be controlled with incentives, training, and participative process. At the beginning of this chapter, the quote from General Eberhart pointed out that risk is inherent to an organization; the safety challenge is to identify hazards, eliminate or mitigate risks, and make smart decisions on what risks we will and will not accept. This applies to everyone and every activity, and determines if we are safe enough. Risk management requires prevention methodology: identify hazards, report them to appropriate people, assess the risks, choose the best solution, and monitor. Sometimes we must accept risk, but must accept it at the right level–strategically, operationally or individually. In managements effort to win the risk game, sound organizational structure and solid corporate processes that achieve prevention methodology will, in the end, effectively manage organizational risks, and provide a comforting answer to the question, Are we safe enough?

Despite the many advances in communications made during the past 20 years, mankind still lives in the shadow of the biblical Tower of Babel. The overwhelming number of different languages and cultures in the world can prevent understanding and hinder cooperation, even as national economies become more and more interdependent.Worldwide expansion of the computer industry, and particularly the Internet, has also contributed to the growing demand for translation services. As people around the world gain access to the Net, the need for multilingual documentation, manuals and Web sites will increase dramatically. According to market research firm Allied Business Intelligence Inc. in Oyster Bay, New York, the worldwide market for translation services will reach $10.4 billion by year-end and is projected to grow to $17.2 billion by 2003. Thats language any entrepreneur looking for a promising opportunity can understand. While there are no statistics available on the number of translation services based in the United States, for the first time, the Census Bureau plans to publish the number of translation services in the 2000 Census.

One year ago, the outlook for New Jerseys commercial real estate market was decidedly bleak. Still, the investment market provided the one bright spot in an otherwise dark picture. Surging capital markets–a reaction to negative returns in the stock market and attractive interest rates–generated a steady flow of money, countering underlying fundamentals. All of these factors, combined with the job growth economists expect to occur during the second half of 2003, have generated cautious enthusiasm among industry players. Throughout the transition of fundamentals, the investment market has continued at a brisk pace. Last year, our group completed $1.2 billion in sales. This year, we are on the same pace as 2002, which is nearly double our typical production.
Industrial Commercial Real Estate Women of New Jersey announced that Susan J. Strauss has been appointed as the organizations president for 2005. Strauss list of clients includes such firms as Ford Motor Company, INVESCO and Mary Kay Cosmetics.
According to Seena Stein, SIOR, president of Newmark Partners, Inc., The New Jersey office market is absorbing newly-built space as soon as it reaches the market. The reason for this is three-fold; financial services firms are moving in to take advantage of excellent transportation between Northern New Jersey and Wall Street; high-tech companies have found New Jersey a friendly environment; and many current New Jersey tenants are expanding within the market.Northern New Jerseys availability rate remained steady, rising to 13 percent from 12.9 percent at 1997s year end. This minimal rise reflects the markets strength, despite a deluge of space coming available (over 4 million square feet) and increasing pressure from New York to keep large tenants from leaving the city.Central New Jersey performed with equal, vigor as its availability rate declined to 12.9 percent from 15 percent, offsetting the 2.5 million square feet of inventory that came on in the first six months of 1998.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

SOFTWARE Software refers to computer programs that are designed by a computer programmer or, more likely, a team of computer programmers, to perform a particular function. The software is either embedded in a device, such as a hand-held device or appliance, or installed on a computer.Software comes in many different types for many different users. Examples of these types include the computers disk operating system (DOS) software; user interface; programming software; browsers; entertainment software, such as gaming; communications software; and utility software, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and publishing.

As your new president, I face a challenging task when it comes to speaking to you about school finance. Let me give you my dilemma. It is the end of the school year as I write this piece and I am reflecting on the uncertain state of school finances in coming months and what these financial challenges mean for us as school system leaders. You will share my frustration that as many as half the nations students may be directly shortchanged of the education they deserve, with the remainder not immune to the impact of belt tightening. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. If youre not in that sunny camp, please continue and let me share my thoughts.

Where Creativity and Capital Meet Using Untapped Collateral and Nontraditional Payment Terms Three significant requirements are needed for a client to utilize monetization financing: 1) an assignment of/or an absolute and unconditional promise to pay from an investment-grade obligor or an acceptable substitute financial instrument backing the transaction, 2) a predictable cash flow, and 3) a date-certain payment. An investment-grade obligor for this program is typically rated by SP and Moodys with an acceptable rating. There are exceptions and substitutes, however, for these rating criteria. If a company is not rated, there are alternate procedures to qualify said obligor. An obligor is typically a customer or other third party who has contractually agreed to make payments to the client or guarantee payments for the client within a term of 1-30 years. In one sense, monetization financing can be viewed as a longer-term variation of factoring without the high cost and other major differences associated with factoring.

Radio continues to be an inexpensive way for dealers and suppliers to reach their increasingly mobile customers Last year, the Minnesota-Dakota Hardware Association used $130,000 in co-op funds provided by five companies — Ace Hardware, United Hardware Distributors, TruServ, Briggs Stratton and 3M — for a five-month-long radio campaign extolling the virtues of the independent dealer over its warehouse competitors. Radio, which traces its roots back to the 1870s when it served as a point-to-point wireless telegraph, has survived several technology revolutions and continues to provide a reliable venue for dealers promotional efforts. Its relatively low cost and access to people while they are mobile are making radio a preferred and efficient medium for more companies. At least one study has even found that online dealers, with their cutting-edge approach to marketing and selling, are using radio ambitiously to get their messages out to shoppers.

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”
Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

At the beginning of this century, a new advertising industry came of age in the United States. Now, at the turn of the twenty-first century, new global media and audiences are reshaping this industry and the advertising we see. The next frontier is worldwide, and the new media are as open-ended as cyberspace. The tremendous growth of the Internet as an advertising medium has been widely documented in a variety of published articles and reports. Although advertisers still invest more than 45 percent of their media budget in newspaper and television, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) estimates that more than $900 million was spent on Internet advertising in 1997 and projects that the end-of-year figures for 1998 will show an expenditure of at least $2 billion. Business Week predicts that ad spending on the Internet will be close to $8 billion by 2002.1 One important reason why revenue is increasing at such a rapid rate is that many ol the more established and popular Web sites are charging more for their ads. In general, advertisers pay for their ads on a “cost per thousand” (CPM) basis, i.e., advertisers pay a fee for every thousand times their ad is viewed. CPM rates for television range from $5 to $6 per thousand. Compare this tc Web site charges: the average cost for banner ads is $17, but more popular sites can charge a premium of $20 to $22 per thousand for access to their visitors. Advertisers pay more for Internet ads because these sites can deliver a more targeted audience.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.

In 1935, the Committee on Educational Standards was formed, the result of a joint effort by the National Chiropractic Association and the Council on State Examining Boards. Shortly after this committee was formed, it began to evaluate chiropractic schools, with the intent that all chiropractic education essentially become equal by meeting specific educational standards. The Committee on Educational Standards later became the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), and the fight continued - between those who wanted improved educational standards and those who did not. The straight schools fought the introduction of the 4,000-hour curriculum, just as they fought the introduction of the first professional degree and its requirement for two years of undergraduate education as a prerequisite to the chiropractic degree program.Through the years, the majority prevailed and eventually, in 1974, the CCE became recognized by the U.S. Office of Education (now the U.S. Department of Education) as the accrediting agency for the chiropractic profession.
A Lack of Trust or a Lack of Honor? The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) situation (please see “Chiropractic Unity Betrayed?” on the front page of this issue) brings several issues to light about the ability of our chiropractic organizations to work together, trust is one of those issues. While the answer is obvious (a lack of trust), it underscores the basic deficit that is holding the chiropractic profession down politically. The ACC didnt feel comfortable taking their “word” for it. The ACC wanted it in writing, but even that failed.
Sports Chiropractic EDITORS: ROBERT D. MOOTZ, DC, AND KEVIN MCCARTHY, DC PUBLISHER: ASPENPart One of this book is devoted to conditioning and exercise injury prevention with articles on the health benefits of exercise, aerobic conditioning related to injury prevention and rehabilitation, weight training, and chiropractic spinal care of the athlete. The articles are well-written and supplemented appropriately with illustrations and photographs. This section has extensive appendices covering topics from readiness questionnaires to examinations to consent forms and recommendations for preventing injuries to major components of the musculoskeletal system. They will provide the practicing doctor of chiropractic with some ready-made forms to use in a sports chiropractic practice. The second part of this compilation addresses injury care. There are sections on assuring quality of care, diagnosis and management of common injuries to the knee, lower leg, and foot, and sections on spinal stabilization and myofascial pain syndromes. In addition to excellent photographs demonstrating most of the procedures, these sections-like others in the book-have accompanying algorithms. TICC is well known for its extensive use of quality algorithms. These most definitely enhance and facilitate the learning experience. For those not familiar with these wonderful tools, they provide a step-by-step approach to making clinical decisions and deciding which procedure should follow. They take the clinician through some complex processes in a logical, easy-to-follow manner.

Medical coverage for seniors STRONG POINTS: major medical/surgical services, cancer and heart care, rehabilitation services WHAT IS NEEDED: more primary-care physicians in general, geriatricians in particular, and doctors who will accept Medicare patients (problems that also face many U.S. communities) THIS SAYS IT ALL: “If you move aging parents to this community, the No. 1 block is that they dont have a primary-care doctor.” - Max Morton, director of prevention and wellness services for Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center.

Q: How long is protein powder good? I have a tub I bought last year that I never finished. Is it still OK to use? Q: Is it worth paying a little more for top-shelf liquor? a: If you hate waking up with a nasty hangover, then shelling out a few extra bucks for your next drink would probably be wise. That way, you can be sure youre buying the purest alcohol possible–with the fewest hangover-inducing impurities. Why the inflated price tag? Well, the process of making most top-shelf liquor is a long one: Premium tequilas can be distilled for as long as five years, while most high-end rum is aged in charred oak casks for 30 years or more.

How often have you taken part in or overheard conversations that touch on the weighty issue of loan officer productivity? This concern for both lenders and managers has not diminished since this article was first published. These authors conducted an informal survey of their colleagues and discovered some very real examples of techniques to improve productivity on several levels. As always, much of this could have been said yesterday but was, in fact, said a dozen years ago. This change in roles has resulted in myriad new titles to describe that position–from commercial account officer to customer relationship manager. For ease of reference, we use the terms account officer, loan officer, and lender throughout this article. Despite these well-thought-out changes in roles, frustration has increased about the internal workings behind the lending process. Internal processes need to be examined so that account officers can minimize the time spent on peripheral activities and concentrate on developing the customer base efficiently.
Local lenders for Washington Mutual Inc. have landed at other companies after the struggling Seattle-based mortgage company said it was closing four offices in Central Pennsylvania. Nationwide, Washington Mutual is closing 100 mortgage offices and laying off 2,500 workers in 17 states. Eighteen were employed in Central Pennsylvania. The company also is shutting down 53 commercial bank branches, idling another 850 workers. None of those branches are in Pennsylvania. Coyne suspected layoffs were on the way, given turmoil in upper management and the slowdown in the mortgage market. Nonetheless, he was surprised by the speed. “They told us we were going to go dark on Monday (July 28),” Coyne said.

The authors conclude that poor antioxidant vitamin status may be harmful to the health of obese/overweight women because it may further increase their alreadyhigh risk of serum lipid disturbances and cardiovascular disease. Suboptimal amounts of certain vitamins may also decrease metabolic rate and energy expenditure. A Moor de Burgos, M Wartanowicz, and S Ziemlanski, Blood Vitamin and Lipid Levels in Overweight and Obese Women, European J Clinical Nutrition 46(11):803-808 (Nov 1992) [Correspondence: M Wartanowicz, Department of Nutrition Physiology and Biochemistry, National Institute of Food and Nutrition, 02-903 Warsaw, Powsinska 61/63, Poland]
Although Tanzanias standard of care recommends that children receive a dose of vitamin A every six months, trial results showed that maternal vitamin A supplementation increased HIV transmission to children. The studys data and safety monitoring board recommended that vitamin A be discontinued from the trial regimen in September 2000. The researchers note in their article, Among HIV-infected US men, the relationship between vitamin A intake and HIV disease progression and mortality was U-shaped, suggesting that both low and high levels of intake are potentially harmful. The group that received multivitamins had higher CD4+ levels and significantly lower viral loads than those on placebo. (Vitamin A combined with the multivitamin was less effective.) Women taking the multivitamin had less fatigue, fewer acute upper respiratory tract infections, fewer rashes, and fewer oral and gastrointestinal problems associated with HIV/AIDS. These women were also less likely to reach WHO stage 4 or die of AIDS-related illness than those taking a placebo. I wonder if the inclusion of minerals known to support the immune system (i.e., selenium, zinc) in the multivitamin formula would increase this benefit. Retail prices for a years supply of the multivitamins used in the trial average about $15 per person. Fawzi WW, Msamanga GI, Spiegelman D et al. Cellphones already play music, scan the Internet, send and receive text messages, and snap photos. Are they going to take the place of our wallets too? Some big players in telecommunications and finance, including Motorola, Nokia, Sony, and MasterCard, think the answer will be yes, that people will rush to make their phones into a kind of magic wand that effortlessly makes purchases or retrieves information for them. Imagine its 2009: Youre at the movies and see a poster for a coming attraction. You pass your mobile phone within a few inches of the poster, which is embedded with a radio frequency (RF) chip, and download a trailer for the movie, which you view on your phones screen. The phone then connects you with a Web site that offers to sell you a ticket and give you a discount on the movies soundtrack, which you can have either sent to you on a CD or downloaded directly into your MP3 player.

Hotels around the country are spending millions of dollars participating in trade shows at conventions all over the world. The objective is to bring more business to the properties. Exhibiting at these happenings is a good idea, and an important part of a marketing plan, but are we maximizing our potential when we go to them? The way to be more productive in this type of promotion is to start with a plan. One should start with the idea of researching the event to determine to what extent the attendees would be or could be business prospects for the property. Then gather information relative to previous events attendance. Here you are looking at numbers of buyers only, not combined figures for buyers, suppliers, speakers, guests, media and others. You should also check out the ratio of buyers to exhibitors to make sure there will be enough floor action to justify the trip. Once the research is done, and you have decided to participate, plan on the number of your hotel staff who should attend. This has a lot to do with the length of the show. You probably do not want anyone working a booth longer than three hours at a shot without a break (some of these shows go on all day).

DUBLIN, Calif. — Hoodia Products International Inc. (Pink Sheets: HDIA) today released a letter to the shareholders from Jacob V.O. Mullins, CEO of Hoodia Products International Inc. In the absence of such appetite suppression products such as ephedrine, the weight loss dietary supplement market is open and ready for a new solution. Hoodia gordonii, the cactus-like plant from the southern African deserts, offers such a solution. Having been traditionally used for centuries as an effective appetite suppressant, Hoodia has now entered the western market by storm, being mentioned on national television talk shows such as The Today Show, Oprah and 60 Minutes.
The Hoodia plant grows in the Kalahari desert region of Southern Africa, including Namibia, Angola, and Botswana. (1-2) History records that the San people of the Kalahari desert used the Hoodia plant to reduce hunger and thirst when they traveled across the desert. (25) This nomadic, ancient group of people was often deprived of food on long hunting expeditions in the desert, and famine was common. (1-3,25,26) In this Part I, of a two-part article, general background information on Hoodia gordonii is reviewed, with a focus on its botanical and biological characteristics.

Say the words gadgets for women to most men and rather quickly schoolboy humour takes over. But during the last year we have witnessed a huge change in British female purchasing habits: women now spend three times more on gadgets than on cosmetics; there are more female gamers than men and, flying in the face of conventional marketing wisdom, 91 per cent of women say the colour of the gadget is utterly unimportant — which means that just producing a pink version of a product isnt going to work any more. No woman would dream of bringing her pink laptop into a meeting. Its about sleek and sophisticated design like the BlackBerry Pearl. Women are tired of products that pink up and dumb down. So steer well clear of Swarovski crystal-encrusted mobile phones and Hello Kitty laptops if you are looking for a gadget gift that will endear you to your wife/partner/ mother/sister this Christmas.

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass., opened its doors to the public in 1955. As its 50th-anniversary gift to the nation, the museum has mounted a superb exhibition including a dozen of its priceless Impressionist paintings. The works included in the tour were carefully selected by the Clarks curators to demonstrate the strength of the museums important Impressionist holdings. Portraits by Renoir, landscapes by Monet and Pissarro, a still life by Manet, a ballet scene by Degas, and an everyday genre scene by Morisot, highlight the spectacular taste of the Institutes founders, Sterling and Francine Clark. As a grandson of a founding partner of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956) grew up in a wealthy New York family with parents who were themselves art collectors and patrons. Clark began seriously acquiring art in 1912, when he was 35 years old. As a collector he might be described as a maverick, disregarding the fashions of the art world and describing art historians as lacking entirely an eye for quality.
An Impressionist Sensibility features 26 paintings by William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent and John Twachtman, among other internationally known artists. The Halffs, who live in San Antonio, acquired these masterpieces during the past 20 years. In addition to reflecting the Halffs keen eye for the finest artworks from this period, the collection also is noteworthy for illustrating the consistency of their vision. The paintings in the collection are linked through a shared sensibility about American cultural aspirations at the turn of the century. The Halff collection is an exceptional portrait of America during a cosmopolitan age, when the Impressionists opened our borders to new ideas about life and art, says Elizabeth Broun, The Margaret and Terry Stent director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The following paper represents the current state of research into the use and usage of the Internet for marketing purposes by small medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The paper discusses how the research was established, its design and development, and sets out the operational parameters addressed. It also identifies the factors that SMEs view as critical to the success or otherwise of their development of a web presence. * What is the main driver for an SME to develop a web site * What are the main, identifiable marketing benefits and drawbacks of a Web presence for an SME
A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

Preventative measures are best defense Robert Wade has seen his share of insects this summer.
Pocket gophers are fossorial (burrowing) rodents–so named because they have fur-lined pouches outside the mouth, one on each side of the face. These pockets, which are capable of being fumed inside out, are used for carrying food. Pocket gophers are powerfully built in the forequarters and have a short neck; the head is fairly small and flattened. The forepaws are large-clawed and the lips close behind large incisors. This feature allows them to use their incisors for digging without getting a mouthful of dirt, a unique feature to gophers. There are over 30 species of pocket gophers in the Western Hemisphere. Pocket gophers vary in size from 5 1/2 inches in length to over 13 inches in length. Litter sizes vary from one to 10 but typically average three to four. In the northern part of their range they have one litter per year, as opposed to up to two in the southern ranges. Young gophers are dispersed above ground and are capable of swimming as well on the search for suitable habitat to begin new burrow systems. Pocket gophers feed in three ways: they feed on roots, above-ground vegetation, and they pull vegetation into their tunnel to be stored in food caches for later consumption. In the vineyard, pocket gophers girdle vines, damage roots systems (most often in new plantings), and cause multiple-irrigation problems by promoting erosion and damaging drip lines. They are solitary little beasts, vigorously maintaining and defending their tunnel system. Depending on the species and available habitat, gopher population density may vary from six to eight per acre, to up to 62 per acre. Gophers do not hibernate and only cohabitate during the breeding season The burrowing activity of one gopher produces up to 70 mounds in one month. So how do you control such an active but solitary rodent? The fact that a gopher is solitary works to your advantage. You have three basic pest management tools for gopher control: Biological control, chemical control and trapping.
A few weeks ago I was at a vineyard looking at some equipment that can be used with netting. After taking up two hours of the growers time we decided to head up to the tasting room and enjoy a little fruit of the labor. I had a couple of people with me who were from the Eastern part of the country and hadnt had a chance to taste some of the California wines, so they were more than happy to spend some time tasting, and buying, as it turned out. While we were working I had noticed a couple of other vehicles passing through, headed toward the tasting room as well. Once we entered, our host was immediately recognized. The first question out of everyones mouth was, What were you doing out there? When bird control was the answer, I could tell from the look on the faces present that we were in for a show. The next five to ten minutes were spent covering everything from propane cannons to netting to chemicals. The amount of misinformation was amazing. These people clearly felt that anything that had to do with bird control was a complete waste of time, irritating to look at and listen to. Why? Well because, those birds cant possibly be that damaging to your wine-grapes - theyre just little birds after all. When you have enough experiences like this you begin to get a feel for the public perception regarding animal damage control. As a grower or winemaker you are involved so heavily in the industry that some things are taken for granted. Everyone realizes that gophers, ground squirrels, starlings and finches are vineyard pests who damage grapes - right? Wrong. A very large percentage of your customers, lets say 75% conservatively, do not think you have any sort of problems with wildlife. What do you think of when you see a deer, or a covey of quail, or some cottontail rabbits in your vineyard? I can guarantee that the terms, Oh, how cute, or Hey, look at those deer dont usually come to mind. I cant print what usually comes to mind for most growers. However, for the people that we encountered in the aforementioned tasting room, as well as for a large percentage of your customer base, seeing wildlife is all part of the vineyard experience.

Ritz-Carlton is all about the little extras. At the upmarket hotel chain owned by Marriott International, you can call on the bath butler if you are just too pooped to fill your own tub, or peruse the pillow menu (yes, really, a menu of pillows). At a Colorado ski resort, your skis are taken to the slopes and your boots warmed each morning. And, as offered at one Rocky Mountain hotel, you can even borrow a golden retriever to help make walks just that little bit more authentic. Yet the companys president and chief operating officer, Simon Cooper, believes that while the downturn was tough, a new generation of travellers, who place great importance on someone else running their baths, will ensure the chains continued success. “Were seeing greater affluence. People are paying less for commodities and more for experiences.” Like his boss JW Marriott Jnr, Mr Cooper, 58, has family links to the industry.
